GreenBUILD Supports Energy-Efficient Education through Synergy with University Initiatives

Energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies are becoming increasingly important components of modern engineering education. Understanding students’ needs and translating them into new educational opportunities is essential for preparing future professionals capable of contributing to Ukraine’s sustainable and energy-efficient reconstruction.

In July 2026, students of Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture (KNUCA) conducted a university survey entitled “Energy Efficiency at KNUCA: Your Voice in Creating the Campaign” within the initiative “Energy Efficiency: From Idea to Action.” The survey involved students and academic staff of the Faculty of Engineering Systems and Ecology and explored their views on energy efficiency, responsible energy use, and the integration of modern energy-saving technologies into university education and everyday activities.

Students call for more energy-efficiency education

The survey demonstrated a high level of interest in the rational use of energy resources, greater energy awareness, and practical implementation of energy-efficient technologies.

Participants particularly supported educational and awareness-raising activities, thematic training sessions, and practical classes. One of the key priorities identified by students was the introduction of new courses addressing energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.

The findings provide a valuable indication of the growing demand for specialised knowledge and practical skills in these fields among future construction and engineering professionals.

From identified needs to practical learning

In response to these educational needs, the Department of Heat Engineering at KNUCA is strengthening its teaching and research capacities. This includes the modernisation of the Heliotechnics Laboratory, where students will be able to study solar energy technologies and energy conversion processes through practical laboratory activities.

The upgraded facilities will also support research by PhD students and academic staff and contribute to the development and testing of energy-efficient solutions for modern buildings and engineering systems.

GreenBUILD contributing to new educational opportunities

The identified demand for new learning opportunities is closely aligned with the objectives of the GreenBUILD project, which aims to modernise higher education in Ukraine in the fields of green, sustainable, and energy-efficient building design.

Within GreenBUILD, Associate Professor Pavlo Pasichnyk from the Department of Heat Engineering is introducing a new elective course, “Design of Integrated Solar Energy Systems.”

The course will incorporate knowledge, methodologies, and good practices from the European university partners of the GreenBUILD consortium, helping students develop modern competencies in renewable energy technologies and their integration into buildings.

Creating synergy for sustainable education

The combination of student-driven initiatives, university infrastructure development, and international cooperation demonstrates how different activities can reinforce each other and generate a stronger impact.

By connecting identified educational needs with curriculum development, practical laboratory training, and European expertise, GreenBUILD contributes to strengthening KNUCA’s capacity to prepare specialists for Ukraine’s green and energy-efficient reconstruction.

This synergy supports not only the modernisation of education but also a broader transformation towards a more sustainable, energy-conscious, and resilient built environment.
