GreenBUILD Consortium Launches Curriculum Development for the New Master's Programme in Sustainable Construction

The GreenBUILD consortium has officially entered the curriculum development phase, marking another important step towards the creation of a modern Master’s programme in Green and Energy-Efficient Building Design.

Following the completion of the Needs Analysis Report and a series of coordination meetings held among project partners, academic teams from Ukrainian and European universities have started the joint development of course syllabi, teaching materials, and learning resources that will form the core of the future programme.

On 22 June 2026, representatives of the Ukrainian partner universities held a dedicated working meeting to discuss curriculum structure, programme content, and coordination of academic contributions. During the meeting, participants reviewed the educational priorities identified through the needs analysis, discussed the integration of European best practices, and agreed on the next steps for course development.

The future GreenBUILD curriculum will consist of ten specialised courses grouped into four thematic areas:

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

  • Energy-Efficiency and Indoor Climate in Buildings;
  • Building Integrated Solar Energy Systems;
  • Sustainable Development in Construction Design;
  • Digital Technologies for Green Building Design;
  • Energy and Urban Planning.

Building Technologies

  • Ventilation Technology and Indoor Air Quality in Buildings;
  • Daylighting and Lighting Engineering.

Green Building Materials and Structures

  • Advanced Green Construction Materials;
  • Building Damage and Renovation.

Safety and Comfort

  • Systems for Ensuring Reliability and Safety of Buildings (VR/AR-based).

The curriculum is being jointly developed by academic teams from Ukraine and leading European partner universities, including Tallinn University of Technology (Estonia), Lund University (Sweden), University of Parma (Italy), and Kütahya Dumlupınar University (Türkiye). European experts contribute their extensive experience in energy-efficient buildings, indoor climate, renewable energy integration, digital construction technologies, sustainable materials, building renovation, and innovative teaching methodologies.

Particular attention is being paid to ensuring that the programme reflects the current and future needs of both the Ukrainian and European construction sectors. The content of all courses will be developed in close cooperation between Ukrainian and European academic teams and will be informed by the findings of the GreenBUILD Needs Analysis Report, which gathered extensive feedback from employers, industry representatives, public authorities, and other stakeholders.

At Zhytomyr Polytechnic State University, the national Ukrainian Coordinator, preparations are already underway for the launch of the new Master’s programme in Green and Energy-Efficient Building Design in September 2026. Academic staff are currently working on the development of course materials, learning outcomes, practical assignments, and teaching methodologies that will equip future graduates with the competencies required for sustainable construction, energy-efficient building design, and resilient reconstruction.

The curriculum development process represents a key milestone in the GreenBUILD project and contributes to the long-term goal of strengthening higher education capacity in sustainable construction, supporting Ukraine’s green transition, and preparing highly qualified professionals for the sustainable recovery and modernisation of the built environment.
