When discussing the future of sustainable construction, most attention is usually given to advanced technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), Artificial Intelligence, smart sensors, and digital twins. These tools are undoubtedly transforming the construction sector and helping companies improve efficiency, reduce waste, and lower environmental impacts.

However, recent research highlights an often-overlooked fact: technology alone is not enough.

Modern construction projects increasingly depend on the ability of professionals to adapt to new working methods, collaborate across disciplines, and integrate sustainability principles into everyday decision-making. Digital transformation requires not only new software and equipment but also new competencies, organisational culture, and continuous learning.

Research in the field of Business Process Management (BPM) demonstrates that construction companies achieve better environmental and operational performance when human resource development is integrated with digital and sustainability strategies. Employees trained in sustainable construction practices, resource efficiency, waste reduction, and digital tools are more likely to contribute to successful project outcomes.

This perspective is highly relevant to the objectives of the GreenBUILD project. While modern technologies remain an essential component of sustainable construction, equal attention must be paid to developing the skills of students, educators, and future professionals. The transition towards climate-resilient and energy-efficient buildings depends not only on innovation itself but also on the people who implement it.

As construction industries worldwide face increasing sustainability requirements, investment in human capital becomes one of the most important drivers of successful green transformation.
